LivingWell
is part of the Hilton Group and currently operates
over 90 clubs worldwide. With 123,000 members
internationally, 15,000 are members of clubs in
North Sydney, Castle Hill, Brisbane City
, Carindale and
Melbourne .
LivingWell intends to grow
its existing network of 5 Australian clubs, and
a $100 million investment will see an additional
10 new clubs over the next 3 years. The new building
developments will initially be focused on
Eastern Australia and will establish
city centre and suburban sites at locations including
Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane. Plans are currently
underway to develop the Premier brand further,
with the first 3 Premier clubs well into planning
phase and due to open on the Gold Coast, Sydney
Hilton and Willoughby in the next 12 months.
LivingWell’s
philosophy is to offer a holistic approach to
health and fitness. This is reflected in the facilities
that they offer.
I
visited their only current Hotel based club at
Melbourne
Airport . Compared
to other hotel gymnasiums that I have trained
at and worked at in the past I would have to say
that this one takes the cake. With the limited
space they had to work with they have done an
fantastic job of providing a good variety of machine
and free weights plus ample cardio equipment.
The first thing you notice when entering the club
is how much natural light it has. This is a massive
draw card for those airport staff and predominantly
office bound individuals whose only daily dose
of Vitamin-D is at sunrise through the car window
during the trip to work. One entire wall of floor
to ceiling glass over looking
Melbourne Airport
gives this otherwise modest sized
facility a feeling of open space. You can’t help
but notice the attention to quality when walking
through this club. Starting with the plush surroundings
of the Hilton Hotel your journey takes you upstairs
to where the Gym is located through a small door.
Once inside, your attention is immediately drawn
to the impressive wall of glass illuminating the
entire club with natural light, providing the
perfect backdrop for the comprehensive cardio
and stretching area. Just past this is a clean
well-planned weight training area with huge mirrors
adding to the feeling of space. At the rear of
the main gym is what could only be described as
an oasis in the middle of concrete jungle. I am
talking about their heated pool, spa, sauna and
steam room. To top it all off their immaculate
change rooms supply members and hotel guests with
enough complimentary soaps, shampoos, conditioners
and hair dryers that even the most fastidious
airhostess could walk out after a gruelling workout
looking a million bucks.
I
spoke with three LivingWell members about what
drives them to keep training and in particular
why they chose to train at LivingWell.
Janene
I’ve
always trained on and off and that has been the
problem, more off than on. I’ve always found it
difficult sticking it out at gyms. This has not
been an issue at LivingWell, I’ve now been coming
to the club 3-4 times per week for the past 18
months and for the first time ever loving
it! I work at the airport so it is very easy for
me to have a workout before or after work. The
club is always fairly quite and I never have any
problem getting the machines I want so that is
a huge bonus. LivingWell is a very social club
and the staff know your name so you actually feel
like someone cares, you’re not just a number.
All these positive aspects have helped me stick
at it and I have now lost weight and feel fantastic.
My job is fairly hectic but my newfound fitness
helps me breeze through the day.
Marjorie
I’ve
always been active even when I was at school so
continuing my training in later years was not
a choir, just a natural progression. I train because
I enjoy a sense of general wellbeing and I simply
function better with everyday task when I maintain
a certain level of fitness. As with Janene, I
also work at the airport so getting into the gym
on a regular basis is easy, I only have to work
across the road. Apart from the convenient location
another big drawcard is that the gym is saturated
in natural light and has a feeling of open space
despite its actual size. It is also nice to be
at a place full of friendly faces and where people
actually know your name.
Tony
Through
out the years I have participated in Basketball,
Football and Golf so it is very natural for me
to train at a gym. Originally I joined LivingWell
with a friend and the main attraction was its
location and convenience. Since joining the gym
I have dramatically increased my fitness, lost
weight and increased my mobility. The main pay
off for my hard work has been an improved quality
of life, everyday tasks are now just so much easier.
The cosmetic benefits are just a bonus.
